Gunpla for kids: which kits are right for young builders?
Gunpla can be a great hobby for kids: it builds patience, focus and fine motor skills. The key is choosing a kit they can finish.
Best grades for kids
- Entry Grade (EG): the best start. No tools needed, parts come off by hand, and the result looks great.
- SD Gundam: small, cute and quick to build. Good for short attention spans.
- High Grade (HG): a good next step once they're comfortable, with an adult handling the cutters at first.
Leave Real Grade and Perfect Grade for later: tiny parts and long builds frustrate most young builders.
Age guidance
Bandai packaging generally lists ages 8 and up for many kits, and 15 and up for some higher grades. Treat this as a starting point: what matters is whether your child can follow a picture manual and handle small parts.
Safety tips
- Use cutters with rounded tips, and keep hobby knives for adults.
- Small parts are a choking hazard for younger siblings and pets.
- Skip sprays and solvents, or use them outside with an adult.
Make it fun
Build together the first time. Let them apply the stickers, choose the pose and give the model a spot on the shelf. Finishing the first kit is what makes them want a second.
